Prove it!

Our class learned a new type of math problem from a visiting teacher, Mr. L. He taught us about a Proof or Prove it problem! The teacher writes a math statement and shares if he/she thinks it is true or false. The students have to prove that it is either true or false by using four different strategies.

Ms. Randee wrote, "3+2 = 4+1" on the board today. She said she thought the problem was true. The students paired up to prove if they agreed that the problem was true or if they disagreed and thought the problem was false.

After solving with partners, we came and shared our findings as a whole class. Overall, we discovered it was true because 3+2 is 5 and 4+1 is 5. That means that both sides are the same and balanced!

We think the problem is true!

We think the problem is true!

We all agree it is true!

The math is true!

The math is true. We used our fingers to help us.

It is true. We use tally marks and other strategies!

We thought it was false and then we figured out it was true!

We know that it is true!

It is true! Both are 5!
